We drove these electric cars until they DIED!

Coronavirus: Click here for advice for car buying during the pandemic - bit.ly/-Car-Buying-Advice

How far can these electric cars go before they die?! We drove the Tesla Model 3, Audi e-tron, Jaguar I-Pace, Nissan Leaf, Kia e-Niro and Mercedes EQC across the UK to see how long they could last! Sure, the smart money is on the Tesla, with its claimed range of up to 348 miles - but can the manufacturer's figures really be trusted? Will victory instead go to the sporty-feeling I-Pace, or the posher EQC? Or will the more affordable likes of the e-Niro and Leaf pull a major upset and make it the furthest? There's only one way to find out...

For those who uses metric and want to know how far these cars went: Mercedes : 194 miles = 312km Audi : 206 miles = 331km Nissan : 208 miles = 334km Jaguar : 223 miles = 358km Kia : 255 miles = 410km Tesla : 270 miles = 434km Based on the amount of likes and comments my comment got I think people do agree that carwow needs to have a straight up converter from miles to km. I think even though the AC will drain the battery , the battery should be happier at a warmer climate maybe it will balance it out. Not sure about Arizona extremes tho... Also Dubai in the summer is a another extreme reaching temperatures 43 °C (109 °F) I havent really seen a video in that climate, worth noting Patrol/Gas prices in the UK are generally double the price you guys get in the US and in the Middle east its really cheap abt a quater of the US prices. I wonder what the charging cost are like over an year in different regions. We should see what Ford and Chevy comes up with in the future should be more competible with KIA in terms of prices .

Ok this is a great test. Real world test. Loved it and reminded me of my years in UK. Big challenge moving forward for electrics - why spend the big money for the luxury? That Niro would work great and has 90% efficiency. £15000 savings over Tesla and £30000 over Merc and Audi have to make people think about what they really want out of these. Tesla long/term is proven - that’s Hyundai’s challenge. But it’s a great start for them. Again, thanks for doing this. PS - and this is all before costs come down on manufacturing batteries

love the channel Mark. Would it be 'all fair (and fun) in love and war' if you took the electrics winners cost of home charging of a full tank, and see how much petrol you can buy for that amount and see how far 6 or 7 petrol or diesel cars in the same class can get on the same financial amount until they run out too. then compare the millage achieved for the cost. These tests you do are so much fun and very entertaining, BUT do unfortunately enfranchise the misconceptions of 'Range Anxiety' and focus on the weak point of EV's. Fossils strong points are longevity BUT we all pay dearly for that one ability despite still needing to stop for food and a pee anyway on journeys. So i think its fair to turn the table and do a similar test for fossil in the same class to be fair and fun. would be good content too... and a very short trip id assume of how far 6 petrol or diesels would get on 4 quid ha ha. what you think??

Hell, if you have the money, drive almost 300 miles in a day, go get dinner, and relax for an hour or so, do a bit more driving, and stay in a hotel. That is still 6+ hours of driving in a day, all on EV.

Hey Mat, I know this is an old video now but, wouldn’t you think that EV makers would implement some sort of tow mode that would REGEN while towing as they regen already anyway. Only sprung to mind as the guy from Out of spec reviews had to do this recently in a video, towing a Tesla with an X5. They got 10% battery in less than 5 miles. It’s uses between 50 and 56% of a full charge depending on temperature and driving style. At 2.6 miles per KWH I should get 208 miles so around 84% of claimed range. If I feel brave I will test it......

  111. Moved by Truth

    Moved by Truth20 أيام قبل

It's also more difficult for the electric motors to push a car while turning in a circle than going straight. So the Tesla's percentage is actually a few points higher. The only real way to do this test would be if all cars were on the same track doing laps at the same speed. That way the amount of effort the batteries are putting out would be the same. Turns taking far more energy. Other than that, this video was really cool.

I appreciate the effort that has gone to this mega test, but I would most likely take into account the distance these cars went up to motorway exit for 2 reasons: First, in real life long distance driving, one would use the charging stations alongside the motorway, have a break, and continue, ideally with 20% battery remaining cause otherwise extreme battery strain ensues. Second and most important, with these ev cars, driving in circles at 10mph is WAY more efficient than steady motorway driving, exactly the opposite of IC cars. In fact if this test was done by driving at 10-30mph, they could have doubled the range the manufacturer claims. EV cars have the same at any engine speed, but obviously with increasing speed aero drag and rolling resistance increase, IC cars on the other hand have a sweet spot of 50-80 mph

Saw the one on the smaller cars - excellent and informative but my question is how long to recharge? Yes overnight is fine but is it enough? How much charge do you get for a half hour? an hour? I am not adverse to electric cars (WAY outside my price range) but if I need fuel 5 mins and I have enough for a 400 mile journey. How long does it take ? As an example if I have a 300 mile journey and a 200 mile range battery what charge time do I need to factor in to complete the journey? That is the real question. Excellent informative video though.

Alex Collins - Ent correct. EVs are still toys and they bring a lot of new problems on the table. With 35£ with my car I make more than 800km. Sure, I haven't the tesla speed in the 0-60, but I don't have erection problems either (for now) so I don't need a fast trendy car to overcome that.

  125. D D

    D D2 سنوات قبل

Imrahil the Twizzy doesn't have the battery problem, because renault makes you change the battery every year. But buying a 5/8 years old battery is crazy. My refernce point is the US market, where teslas lose a lot of value. Here in Europe maybe EVs are still scarce. And people always try to pump up the prices in the used market. They will go down. Today EVs will be obsolete soon.

  126. Alex Collins - Ent

Alex Collins - Ent2 سنوات قبل

@Stephen Launchbury When he connected the Tesla it states a cost of 35p per KWH on the display panel of the charging station. The car has a 100KWH capacity so that's £35 to recharge and I'll guess you're in for quite a wait! I just looked it up and it seems that if you're lucky enough to find a Tesla Super Charger you can go from 0% - 50% in 40 minutes. Whereas Pod Point claim it will take around 8 hours to fully charge a 60KWH car. I still find electric ultimately to be the wrong solution going forward. It's expensive when you factor in the initial cost and even though recharging is cheaper the range is half that of a modern diesel. Not to mention it's 'green' credentials; batteries are made in highly pollutant fashion and then transported around the world, you still need to burn fossil fuels to create the electricity and then what's the life-cycle of the batteries themselves, cost for replacement? Etc etc etc.

Amazing video!!! Thanks a lot for doing what you normally shouldn't do with your car. We all wonder how far they actually go. But at 19:22 19:23, the empty car is being charged using an extension cord. The rule of thumb is not to do that. That's a good rule, not because it is very bad in itself, but because this may lead to one of two very dangerous situations. One of those is the risk of connecting more load on the same extension. That's not the case here. The other mistake to do is to coil the cable. That's VERY much the case here. That will induct lots of heat in the coil, and around the coil. If letting this stay several hours, it is very likely that it may start burning. You should NEVER EVER charge a car with a coiled cable. Such an extension cable should be unwinded and placed a bit here and there to avoid inductions. I guess you didn't charge for hours in this case. :-) A third risk of using an extension cord is that you use more plugs, and each of them may get warm. You should always check the plugs by holding the hand on them after 15-20 minutes of charge. It is normal that they get a bit warm, but it shouldn't hurt at all to touch them. Again, thanks a lot for the video! :-)

  132. Gemetics

    Gemetics9 أشهر قبل

Induction only applies to AC power, the car is charging with DC, as all batteries require to charge. All cables have resistance and therefore generate some heat which is quite normal. As long as the extension is rated for the job it is no problem.

That combined with the colder than normal ambient air temperature reduced the ranges of each car by approx 10 percent I'm guessing. So the manufactures claimed distances weren't as far off as what was shown here. Overall an educational video for anyone who either owns or will own an electric vehicle. Side note: the fear and anxiety you showed when trying to make it to the charging station shocked me. Not a life or death situation. lol I don't know if they exist yet I suspect they do, but having a backup battery to minimally charge the car/s should be something everyone purchases who drives an EV. @WMS 1 You would need a racetrack to test it. It's impossible to drive on a German Autobahn with that speed until the Tesla battery is empty. Autobahnen are very busy. On unlimited stretches it's more like 130 - 80 - 160 - 230 - 110 - 180 - 100... km/h all the time. On two-lane stretches not even that. The RH lane is always clogged with lorries, on the middle lane they overtake, on the left lane the pensioner tries to overtake the two lorries.

@WMS 1 I don't know and I'll never find out ;) . Note that my 320 km quote does not mean 160 km/h permanently as normally you can't drive at that speed on a German Autobahn for long. What a great video!! I have a 2015 Fiat 500e that I love love love, and twice during my ownership, I’ve pushed the limit and driven many miles on the tortoise. Never stopped, always made it. One thing tho... after I did that tho its long range ability went down a bit. I started out getting 95-98 miles every time. After pushing it to zero/less than zero, I never got above 90 again. Point being, keeping your car battery 20% to 80% will extend the life of the car. Never charge to 100% unless you absolutely need it for a trip, and never let the battery fall below 20%. Google that. Also Google that you can buy one for $6,000-8,000 and it’s a terrific city car, not a long road tripper, but great for a small region where most people live. 20%-80% can turn a five year electric car experience into a ten or more years long experience. GREAT VIDEO!! Helps me decide for my next car. Can’t wait for you to do the VW and the Ionic. P.S. Tesla may be the best, but they are ugly cars to me. The Y is ok, but mainly, they’re ugly because of the people who drive them. I live in the SF Bay Area, so maybe it’s different elsewhere. Tesla’s are everywhere here, the standard, and man oh man the assholes who drive them are as well.

@McKevin Dauntless "Winning" means receiving what you pay for. If I pay for 370 miles of range, I want 370 miles of range. The Kia delivers the range that their owners paid for (in ideal temperature conditions, it would have certainly achieved the claimed range, maybe even surpassed it). The Tesla is way below the overoptimistic range claim, even if you consider the cold weather. I doubt the Tesla would make the claimed range even in ideal temperature conditions. So the true winner is the one that can deliver what the customer paid for, and that's the Kia. The Tesla and the Merc are the worst ones in underdelivering.

Also, the thing about range is, it depends on where you’re driving. The majority of people will not spend their day on a motorway - how about a range test just driving a round a town all day, maybe with a short period of some more open A roads to see if the range changes dramatically based on type of usage?

@MrAwawe Not quite true. I have worked in EV design in the 70's and 80's. A vehicle with more power has to have a larger motor and batteries. All this adds mass, so climbing bankings (inclines) uses more power therefore more energy over distance. This is never fully recuperated in regen. braking. Since some (if not most) roads have inclines and declines, a larger vehicle uses more energy per distance. Experimentally we found in mixed cycle the energy consumption per max power output was greater the the square of the increase. But intercity in our country, which is very hilly with winding roads, the consumption was very much greater than the square. Electric cars in our country are impractical for all but commuting intracity.

  205. MrAwawe

    MrAwawe2 سنوات قبل

@Mark Stuckey those things matter a lot less when you have a motor that only uses as much energy as it needs and regenerative breaking, which gives you back energy when you're going downhill or there's a car in front of you.
